Volleyball rolls past Chattanooga, 3-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (September 9, 2011) – The trio of Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.), Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) combined for 32 kills to lead the ETSU volleyball team past Chattanooga, 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-22), Friday night at Maclellan Gym.

With the victory, ETSU opened the first day of the Country Inn & Suites Invitational a perfect 2-0, while evening its record to 5-5 on the season. Chattanooga falls to 1-7 on the season.

Devine led the offensive charge with 13 kills, while Hardy and Stancliff added 10 and nine, respectively. Devine extends her streak of 10 or more kills to seven straight matches. Kayla Williams (El Paso, Texas) continued her solid play by dishing out 40 assists, while adding seven digs and four kills. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the ETSU defense with a game-high 20 digs.

ETSU finished the match with a solid .264 hitting percentage, while recording 49 kills. The Buccaneer defense held the Mocs to .186 hitting on the night.

With the score tied at 9-9 in the opening set, ETSU reeled off three straight points to take the 12-9 lead. The run was capped off by a Stancliff service ace. The Mocs rallied to tie the score on two occasions, but the Bucs went on another run of their own to maintain the lead at 17-14. The set concluded with ETSU taking four of the last five points to earn the 25-19 set victory. The Bucs posted an impressive .312 attack percentage in the set, while Devine led the way offensively with four kills. Stancliff posted three kills to go along with the service ace in the set to equal Devine’s four points.

The first significant run in the second set occurred when the Mocs reeled off four straight points to take a 10-7 lead after being down a point. The Bucs went on a 6-0 run of their own to take a lead at 16-15. The Mocs quickly took five of the next six points to regain the lead at 20-17, but ETSU rallied once again to later even the score at 22 apiece. The match went back and forth for the next several points to extend the set. With the score tied at 26, two attack errors by Chattanooga clinched the set for the Bucs, 28-26. Devine once again led the Buccaneer offense with seven kills in the set, while Stancliff added five kills of her own.

In set number three, ETSU extended a 6-5 advantage by reeling off four straight points to take a 10-5 lead. Freshman Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) paced the ETSU run with two kills. The Bucs extended the lead from there by taking a 24-16 advantage. The Mocs reeled off six straight points to make it interesting, but a kill by Hardy clinched the set and match. Gesell finished the night with a solid performance of six kills on just nine attempts.
