Volleyball set to take on USC Upstate in home and conference opener

Monday, September 19, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (September 19, 2011) – After opening the season on the road for the first four weeks of the season, the ETSU volleyball team comes home for the first time in a Tuesday night conference showdown with USC Upstate at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.

The Bucs are coming off a tough weekend at the JMU Coca-Cola Classic in which they dropped three contests; however, the squad did show glimpses of excellence, particularly in a narrow 3-2 defeat against Big East member Georgetown. ETSU also dropped matches against James Madison and Appalachian State.

One week prior to last weekend’s tournament at James Madison, ETSU finished a perfect 3-0 to win the Country Inn & Suites Invitational at Chattanooga. The Bucs defeated UNC Asheville, Chattanooga and Tennessee Tech to win the tournament title.

The Bucs continue to be dominant across the frontline as they lead the Atlantic Sun in blocks with 2.37 per set. ETSU ranks in the top half of the conference in every other statistical category.

Individually, senior Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) continues to lead the league in blocks at 1.29 per contest. In addition, Stancliff is coming off a career-best blocking performance against Georgetown, where she totaled 12 blocks. Sophomore Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) ranks second in the A-Sun in both kills (4.25) and points (4.70).

ETSU closed the conference season last year at home against USC Upstate as the Bucs came away with an impressive 3-0 sweep of the Spartans. In the contest last season, ETSU hit an impressive .324, its second best hitting percentage of the season, to quickly defeat USC Upstate.

Tuesday’s match against USC Upstate is Back in Blue at Brooks night – fans that wear ETSU apparel receive admission for just a Buc ($1). We also encourage you to come for a chance to win free food from Wendy’s and participate in the WENDY’S WIN promotion. If the Bucs beat USC Upstate, each fan will receive a coupon for free Wendy’s.
