Buccaneers complete successful outing in Charlottesville with two titles

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (October 16, 2011) – Junior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) won the orange flight singles championship, on Sunday, at the UVA Invitational by defeating Eastern Kentucky’s Hugo Klientovsky 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals and taking the title on a default in the finals.

“[Ramirez] played an excellent tournament,” said ETSU assistant coach Ricky Rojas. “He bounced back really well from the UTC tournament and we hope he continues this outstanding play.”

Virginia’s Julen Uriguen, the draw’s top seed, won his semifinal match against Brian Welnetz of Penn State, but could not continue on to the finals due to an injury.

Senior Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) also advanced to the finals of his draw by defeating Radford’s Igor Ogrizek in the semifinals of the gold flight. Bonnevalle’s luck ran out in the finals.

“Overall is was a pretty good weekend for the team, especially for [Ramirez] and [Bonnevalle],” added Rojas. “Hopefully they can continue this into regionals next week.”

The ETSU men’s tennis team begins play at the ITA Regionals on Thursday, October 20, in Knoxville, Tenn.
