Evans, ETSU women lead after first round at Lady Paladin

Friday, October 28, 2011

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2011) – After posting a school record for single round team score on the final day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate earlier this week, the ETSU women’s golf team picked up where it left off during first round play Friday in the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course.

Led by sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), who carded a 3-over-par 75 and finished atop the individual leaderboard, the first-place Buccaneers posted a team score of 305 and ended the day six strokes ahead of second-place Georgia State.

Individually, Evans is one stroke ahead of Samford’s Natalie Mitchell, while 14 other players are just two back at 77. Of those tied for third place, the Bucs had two players in that group, as both sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) and senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) finished at 5-over-par.

“We really played well on the final day of our last tournament, and we are continuing to play well so far in this event,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team is coming off a third place showing at the Palmetto Intercollegiate. “The conditions today were just brutal with rain and wind throughout. It caused scores to be higher, but as the leaderboard showed our ladies were the best at handling it today.

"It was great to see Sian at the top of the leaderboard, and other players like Larissa and Mayte playing well. We just want to maintain this quality play all weekend.”

Other ETSU results included a tie for 22nd by junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa).

The Bucs will return to second round action on Saturday, and fans can watch live scoring via Golfstat.com. For more on ETSU women’s golf, including daily updates on the day’s play, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
