Men’s Soccer gives back to community through North Side’s All-Star Reading Night

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 4, 2011) – The ETSU men’s soccer team took stepped aside from its daily routine to lend a hand back to the community on Thursday night, taking part in the All-Star Reading Night held at North Side Elementary School.

“It’s always important for our team to be involved in the community,” commented ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese. “Our team appreciates the opportunity to give back to the Johnson City community which has been supportive of our program since its inception. We pride ourselves on being positive role models who can couple academics with athletics.”

The All-Star Reading Night is a family involvement activity where North Side students and families interact with area student-athletes and coaches from ETSU, Science Hill High School and semi-pro players from the Mad Hatters basketball team.

North Side students went around to different stations, referred to as bases, participating in different activities at each base. At first base, students read Accelerated Reader (AR) books to athletes in the media center and then took an AR test on the book. Students then went to the science lab, second base, where area coaches and Mad Hatter players read them a book and provided a book for students to keep. Lastly, a mini-clinic highlighted by the ETSU men’s soccer team was held in the gymnasium. At the conclusion of the clinic, students received a free soccer ball courtesy of Michelin and Jones OK Tires.

When students completed the bases, they were then treated to star gazing with the ETSU Astronomy Department.

The Bucs, holding the mini-clinic at station three, helped introduce North Side students to soccer using different drills. The students performed both dribbling and passing drills with members of the Buccaneer soccer team, and took part in relay races and an organized game inside the gymnasium.

“We opened their eyes to the game of soccer and the kids really seemed to enjoy it,” said ETSU redshirt freshman Nick Dykes. “A lot of them hadn’t played soccer before, but they really seemed to pick up on it and had a great time learning. Overall, it was a great experience.”
