JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (November 21, 2011) – The ETSU men’s golf team signed two standouts, Christopher Hickman (Centreville, Md.) and Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland), who will compete for the Buccaneers in the 2012-13 season, head coach Fred Warren announced on Monday.
Christopher Hickman – 5-11 – Centreville, Md. (The Blue Ridge School)
Hickman, who is a three-year letterwinner for head coach William Darrin at The Blue Ridge School, will come to Johnson City with plenty of accolades during his junior career. Hickman is currently ranked the top 2012 junior in both Maryland and Delaware. He qualified for the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, where he was 55th in stroke play before losing 1-down in the match play round of 64. Hickman won the Delaware Junior Amateur Championship the last three years, while being named the 2010 and 2011 Delaware Junior Player of the Year.
He was selected to the Delaware Golf Association Williamson Cup Team in 2009, 2010 and 2011, while placing third in 2010. Hickman finished top-10 at the 2010 and 2011 Delaware Amateur Championship, while also posting several top-10 finishes in AJGA events.
During his career at The Blue Ridge School, Hickman has been selected three times a VISAA Division I All-State performer, as well as being a three-time First Team All-VIC selection. Hickman finished third at the 2010 All Virginia Independent Conference Tournament.
Gudmundur Kristjansson – 5-10 – Reykjavik, Iceland (Sund High School)
Kristjansson comes to ETSU with a successful junior playing career in his home country of Iceland. He was the Icelandic Junior Match Play champion in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Meanwhile, he earned medalist honors at the 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 Icelandic Junior Stroke Play Championship.
Perhaps Kristjansson’s biggest golf accomplishment so far was winning the 2010 Duke of York young champions trophy. In addition, he also claimed the 2010 Reykjavik Golf Course Golf Championship. He is currently ranked 276 in the European Golf Rankings after earning an impressive fourth place finish at the European Men’s Team Championship, where he shot 71-67—138. Kristjansson has recorded over 25 career victories in his junior golf career, including eight wins in 2010.
