Enoch ties for second individually to lead men’s golf at Sea Best Invitational

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2012) – ETSU senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) fired a final round 2-under-par 70, equaling the lowest round of the day, to lead the ETSU men’s golf team to a sixth place finish at the Sea Best Invitational at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Enoch, who started the day tied for seventh place after a second round 71, shot up the leaderboard on Tuesday thanks to six birdies and even found himself in a share of the lead with just one hole to play. However, an unfortunate double-bogey on his final hole of the day – the par-5 ninth hole – dropped him into a tie for second place at +2 (77-71-70—218) overall.

The second place finish by Enoch marks his fifth top-20 finish already this season, while it was his highest finish since sharing the individual title at the 2010 NCAA East Regional. It also marks the top finish of the season for the Bucs individually.

ETSU moved up in the team standings to finish in sixth place overall at +56 (315-298-307—920). The sixth place finish for the Bucs is their highest of the 2011-12 season thus far. No. 34-ranked Florida won the event with a +20 overall score. No. 36 Liberty came in second at +35, while No. 7 North Florida finished in third at +38. The Gators have now won the event in back-to-back seasons.

No. 41 East Carolina came in fourth (+45) followed by Coastal Carolina (+47), ETSU, Old Dominion (+59), Florida Gulf Coast (+60), Mercer (+61), Charleston Southern (+62), Jacksonville State (+64), Jacksonville (+71) and Georgia State (+76).

T.J. Vogel of Florida won the individual title as he fired a final round 74 to finish even-par for the tournament. Vogel, ranked No. 14 in the country individually, was aided by a second round 69, which equaled the low round of the tournament.

Enoch and Harold Varner of East Carolina finished just two shots back in second place at +2, while Kevin Aylwin of North Florida, Robert Karlsson of Liberty and Jamey Salmon of Jacksonville finished in a tied for fourth at +3.

ETSU freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland) closed out the tournament with a 77 to finish at +13 and 24th in the individual standings. The highlight of the tournament for Gibson was a solid even-par second round on Monday.

Freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) had a tough afternoon as he shot an 81 to finish tied for 28th at +15. Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England) shot his lowest score of the tournament as he came in with a round of 79 to finish in 55th position overall.

The Bucs return to action on February 19 when they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classic. The event commences on Sunday, February 19 and finishes on Tuesday, February 21, with 18-holes each day.
