Lady Bucs look to finish road swing off on a positive note Saturday at Kennesaw

KENNESAW, Ga. (Feb. 3, 2012) – Coming off their first road win of the season, the ETSU women’s basketball team will look to end its three-game road swing on a positive note Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bucs take on Kennesaw State. Tip is set for noon inside the KSU Convocation Center.

Sophomore Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) became the first Lady Buccaneer player to score at least 30 points in a game Thursday night at Mercer, since red-shirt senior guard Tarita Gordon (Wichita, Kan.) accomplished the feat against Xavier in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Mitchell, who set a career high with the effort, went 12-of-15 from the field and made nine consecutive field goals during a 19-plus minute stretch in the second half in Macon.

While Mitchell was explosive as can be, the Lady Bucs (6-16, 5-6 A-Sun) as a team shot a season-high 53.6 percent from the field (30-56), marking the first time the Blue and Gold eclipsed the 50-percent plateau since shooting 57.1 percent (40-70) against Mercer back on Jan. 31, 2011 in Johnson City. Along with the strong shooting night, ETSU also tallied 14 assists and 12 steals, while forcing the Lady Bears into 23 turnovers resulting in 20 points on the offensive end for the Lady Bucs. Overall, eight of the ten Lady Buccaneer players who logged minutes reached the scoring column on Thursday night for ETSU.

Meanwhile, as the Lady Bucs were enjoying their first road win since last Feb., Kennesaw State (10-13, 5-7 A-Sun) snapped its two-game losing skid with a 54-45 win over USC Upstate on Thursday night.

The Owls jumped out to a 22-6 lead to begin the game – and despite having the Spartans pull within one with 3:12 left to play – Kennesaw State managed to hang on for the nine-point win. Lisa Capellan, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, paced the Owls with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while 5-foot-8 junior guard Chelcey Farrar added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. As a team, Kennesaw State assisted on 14 of its 19 makes, and registered 14 steals along with swatting nine shots.

On the season, the Owls have recorded 230 steals in 23 games, while averaging 63.2 points and giving up 65.7 points. Individually, red-shirt freshman guard Taylor Mills leads the team with 13.1 points and 2.7 threes per game, but finished with nine points on 1-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc against USC Upstate.

The Lady Bucs have won all 12 games in the series, including a 77-61 win over Kennesaw State back on Jan. 9 inside the MSHA Athletic Center. Despite five of the 12 games being decided by 10 points or less, the Lady Bucs have won the last five games in the series on average of 20.2 points. Ironically, in the last three meetings, the Lady Bucs have held Kennesaw State to 61 points, while Gordon is averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in three career games against the Owls. In addition, Mitchell is also posting 14.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.0 steals in three career games versus Kennesaw State.

Fans unable to make the trip to Kennesaw can listen to all the action on WXSM-AM 640 The Extreme Sports Monster as “Voice of the Lady Bucs” John Stevens will carry the play-by-play. Live video will also be offered on ASun.TV, while live stats will be carried via
