Men's tennis senior captures first-ever weekly award
MACON, Ga. (Feb. 15, 2012) – Highlighted by a week in which he defeated an ITA-ranked opponent for the first time since ETSU’s 2010 NCAA Tournament run, the Atlantic Sun Conference named senior Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) its men’s tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The honor is Gille’s first in his four seasons at ETSU, and is the Bucs’ first since Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) was recognized the week of Mar. 30 of last year.
Gille completed the week with a 2-1 record at the No. 1 singles position against competitors from No. 73 Drake, Denver and No. 38 Nebraska. Both of the ETSU senior’s victories came in straight sets, with Gille compiling a sets record of 5-2 through three matches.
On Sunday against the Huskers, Gille dominated No. 78 Benedikt Lindheim 6-3, 6-0 for his first win over an ITA-ranked opponent since defeating Tennessee’s then-No. 36 Boris Conkic 6-4, 6-1 on May 16, 2010 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Gille’s other victory on the weekend came on Saturday against Denver’s Enoj Bonin 6-4, 6-2. In his only loss of the week, Gille pushed Drake’s No. 51 Anis Ghorbel to his limits in a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) war which wound up in favor of Ghorbel. The three-set match was only the third Ghorbel (15-2) had been forced into through this year’s spring and fall seasons.
ETSU (0-7) ends its road swing on Saturday when it travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to battle MTSU at 2 p.m. The following weekend, Feb. 25-26, the Bucs will play their first home matches of the year when they welcome Appalachian State on Saturday and Tennessee Tech on Sunday.
