Mitchell receives Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honors

MACON, Ga. (Feb. 27, 2012) – With the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Basketball Championships set to get underway Wednesday afternoon, the conference office released their postseason awards on Monday, and sophomore guard/forward Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun.

Mitchell – who received Second Team All-Conference honors a year ago – led the Lady Bucs in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and minutes played.

The Bluffton, Ga. native led the league in field goal percentage (55.9), ranked second in double-doubles (9), and rebounding (9.9), and ninth in scoring (13.8) in 18 conference games.

“Destiny is such a tough and physical player, and she is always going to give you 100 percent each time she steps out on the floor,” said head coach Karen Kemp. “She battled back from a serious knee injury in the off-season, so Destiny wasn’t at full strength earlier in the year, but she definitely turned her game into a higher gear once the conference season started. Destiny is one of the best players in the conference and we’re fortunate to have her for a couple more years.”

Overall in 28 games this season, Mitchell recorded 10 double-doubles, 19 double figure scoring games, and 13 games with 10 or more rebounds – including the last seven games to end the season. On top of those outstanding numbers, the sophomore sensation was the only player in the A-Sun to record a 20-point, 20-rebound effort after finishing with 23 points and 20 rebounds against league-leading Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon, while also registering six games with 20-plus points, which was tied for fifth among A-Sun players.

Mitchell was also only one of three players in the A-Sun to record a 30-point game in 2011-12, where she finished 12-of-15 from the field and made nine consecutive field goals over a stretch of 19-plus minutes at Mercer on Feb. 2.

Mitchell enjoyed an impressive run midway through the conference season where she averaged 21.4 points and 11 rebounds, while also shooting an astonishing 77.6 percent (45-58) from the field in games against Lipscomb, USC Upstate, Mercer, Kennesaw State, and Jacksonville. In addition, she finished the second half of the conference season posting up 17.2 points and 12.2 rebounds, along with shooting 61.5 percent (72-117).

Meanwhile, as Mitchell was selected to the second team, Stetson’s Victoria McGowan and FGCU’s Sarah Hansen were unanimous first team selections, while Haley Nelson (Belmont), Tee’Ara Copney (USC Upstate), and Brittany Kirkland (UNF) capped off the list.

After being tabbed preseason player of the year, McGowan lived up to the expectations and was named Player of the Year, while Coach Smesko was selected Coach of the Year after guiding FGCU to a perfect 18-0 conference season. Jacksonville’s Crystal Bell took home Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The Lady Bucs gear up for postseason play as ETSU takes on top-seeded FGCU on Wednesday afternoon in a quarterfinal game. Tip is set for noon inside Mercer’s University Center.
