Women’s team adds two multi-event athletes while men’s team adds two throwers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2012) – ETSU track and field head coach Dave Walker announced his first wave of signees for the 2012-13 recruiting class on Tuesday, adding Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Kristin Chapman (Jacksboro, Tenn.) to the women’s team, and Walter Burn (Nashville, Tenn.) and Cooper Varner (Corryton, Tenn.) to the men’s side.

“This is just the start to our signing class and we are very excited about the future of this program,” ETSU assistant coach Eli Sunquist said. “All four of these student-athletes have a lot of potential and we are looking forward to working with them next year.

“We are continuing to build a well balanced program, and all of our coaches are doing a great job recruiting to those standards. Also, it’s very nice when we get Tennessee kids to stay in-state and help us further the success we’ve had here.”

On the women’s side, Williams provides more sprint speed and jumping distance to a continuously growing ETSU squad. Coming to ETSU out of Alpharetta High School, Williams holds a personal best time of 24.70 in the 200m dash which would tie ETSU’s top mark from the 2011-12 indoor season and rank Williams fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Her other personal marks include an 11.93 100m dash and a 17 feet 1.75 inches (5.22m) long jump.

Chapman will elevate the women’s team in the multi events, which she competed in at Campbell Co. High School in Jacksboro, Tenn. Her personal best in the high jump of 5 feet 8 inches (1.72m) would rank second in the conference behind ETSU sophomore Taylor Story (Germantown, Tenn.). Chapman’s other personal marks are a time of 16.14 in the 100m hurdles, 2:33.92 in the 800m, a 16 feet 11.25 inches long jump and a score of 3,014 in the pentathlon.

The men’s side adds two throwers in Burn and Varner. Burn, the Franklin Road Academy school record holder in the shot put and discus, holds a personal best throw of 53 feet 10 inches (16.41m) in the shot put, along with a 147 feet 1 inch (44.83m) discus toss. The shot put would have ranked Burn No. 1 in the A-Sun during this year’s indoor season, while the discus throw would have ranked the Nashville native fourth in the conference during last year’s outdoor season. Burn has racked up numerous awards throughout his high school career, including being named 2011 track and field MVP at Franklin Academy and earning first place in the discus and shot put for Division II-A State.

Varner will also be working with ETSU throws coach Doro Martin, looking to build upon his personal bests of 117 feet one inch (35.69m) in the discus and 46 feet 3 inches (14.10m) in the shot put. Both marks would also rank Varner in the top 10 in the A-Sun if he were to have posted them during last year’s outdoor season and this year’s indoor season.
