Men’s golf to participate in General Hackler Championship

Saturday, March 10, 2012

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (Mar. 10, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team will continue its 2012 spring season at the General Hackler Championship beginning on Sunday at the DeBordieu Club.

In addition to ETSU, the 15-team field will feature defending back to back NCAA champion and defending General Hackler tournament champion Augusta State as well as Coastal Carolina, Air Force, No. 9 Arkansas, East Carolina, Furman, Lamar, Maryland, Navy, No. 19 New Mexico, No. 14 North Florida, Pepperdine, Tennessee and No. 24 Virginia. Over half of the field advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

This is the 10th annual General Hackler Championship, but it is the first time the event will be played at the 7,189-yard, par-72 DeBordieu Club. The tournament was held at the TPC Myrtle Beach in each of the previous nine years.

In 2010, ETSU took home the team title and used the victory to jump start a strong spring season that eventually finished with the Atlantic Sun Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals.

The Bucs have had plenty of success in the General Hackler Championship over the years as they have won the event twice in the past five years. During the 2010 tournament, ETSU led from start to finish for its second team title of the spring. Seamus Power won the individual title after finishing the event with a three-round score of 1-under. The Bucs finished the event three shots clear of host Coastal Carolina and nine shots ahead of the eventual NCAA Champion Augusta State.

Tee times for Sunday’s 36 holes will begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday’s final round will also start at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring for the tournament will be available through golfstat.com.

DeBordieu Club features a championship 18-Hole golf course designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. Noted as one of Pete and P.B. Dyes favorite designs, the links style course at DeBordieu has been consistently ranked among the top 10 private clubs in South Carolina.

The golf course opened in 1987 and features an outstanding mix of Pete Dye's design qualities set in the beauty of the South Carolina Low Country and surrounded by an abundance of natural wildlife.

Since its opening, DeBordieu Club has been host to many regional championships including the Carolinas Mid-Amateur, the South Carolina Women's Amateur and the Carolinas Senior Amateur.
