Bucs will welcome in UNCA for 3:05 p.m. start at Thomas Stadium

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 19, 2012) – Just two days after capping off its first conference series of the season, the ETSU baseball team will host UNC Asheville in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. inside Thomas Stadium.

Freshman right-hander Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) (0-2, 4.00), who has made two starts this season, will take the mound for the Bucs. Nesselt has tossed 18 innings and has given up nine hits, eight runs and three walks, while striking out 10. He leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in opponent’s batting average as he is only allowing the opposition to hit .153 off of him, while also leading the league in fewest hits allowed.

The Bucs went 1-2 over the weekend in their conference opening series against Belmont. The Bruins defeated ETSU 8-2 on Friday before the Bucs won game two 8-3 on Saturday. Belmont took the rubber match with a narrow 4-3 win on Sunday.

Sophomore Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) continues to lead the Bucs at the plate with a .406 batting average to go along with three home runs and 18 RBI. Meanwhile, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) is batting .342 with a league-leading 10 home runs. Scruggs also leads the squad with 20 RBI and a .808 slugging percentage. Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) leads the league with three triples on the season.

UNC Asheville currently sits at 11-9 after most recently sweeping a weekend conference series over VMI. The UNCA pitching staff leads the Big South Conference in fewest walks allowed as the Bulldogs have allowed just 52 walks

The Bulldogs are led at the plate by Hunter Bryant with a .383 average, while Jordan Lurie is batting .366. Bill Creighton is hitting .358 and leads the team with three home runs and 22 RBI. 

ETSU leads the all-time series against UNC Asheville, 26-19. The Bucs have won the last seven meetings against the Bulldogs, dating back to 2007. Last season, ETSU took both games against UNCA .

The Bucs will hit the road for the first time in conference play as they will face Florida Gulf Coast in a three-game set beginning on Friday.
