Bucs win fourth-straight match as Jaime ties Batsula for fifth all-time in career singles victories

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 31, 2012) – Senior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) won her 86th career singles match to tie former Buccaneer Olya Batsula for fifth place in all-time singles victories at ETSU, as the Buccaneer women’s tennis team defeated Belmont, 7-0, on Saturday at the Centennial Sportsplex.

Jaime defeated Belmont’s Fabiana Mersan 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, improving the Madrid native’s season record to 21-9, 9-6 dual, and launching her into ETSU’s top five in career wins. The senior also now sits eight victories behind Kristy Pace-Wagner for fourth place in the all-time record books.

In the process, ETSU (8-7, 5-1 A-Sun) won its fourth-consecutive match to push its record above .500 for the first time since its season opening win against Radford (Jan. 28). The Buccaneers have now won their last three matches by way of a 7-0 result, while Belmont (5-9, 2-3 A-Sun) has dropped its last two matches in a 7-0 fashion after being swept by USC Upstate on Friday.

ETSU took control of the match from the opening serve.

In doubles action, Jaime and fellow senior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) remained perfect in A-Sun play with an 8-4 defeat of Belmont’s top duo in Fabiana Mersan and Catherine Holliday. The Bucs’ other senior duo of Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) cleaned up at No. 2 singles by defeating Nikki Maciel and Laura Stack 8-1. The closest doubles set of the day was decided in the No. 3 match, but ETSU’s young duo of freshman Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and sophomore Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) won their third-straight doubles match with an 8-5 defeat of Carolyn Caire and Natalia Nunes.

The Bucs kept their momentum rolling into singles play, grabbing every set through the six matches on their way to a flawless afternoon.

Along with Jaime’s straight-set victory at No. 1 to push her winning streak to four-consecutive matches, Andreazza, Brumit and Navrostska all earned their fourth-consecutive victories at No. 2, 5 and 6, respectively. Andreazza defeated Maciel 6-2, 6-4, Brumit earned her team-leading 10th dual victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-2 result, and Navrostska handled Nunes 6-1, 6-1.

Kedzo and freshman Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) each improved their winning streaks to two matches, as Kedzo defeated Holliday 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Williams took down Stack 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Williams has dropped just one game through her last four sets after defeating Lispcomb’s Danielle Hensen 6-0, 6-0 on Friday.

The ETSU women’s tennis team will return home for its next match on Friday, when it welcomes Mercer to the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m.
