JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2012) – Starting pitcher Kyle Westwood allowed just five hits and two run in 6.2 innings and North Florida evened up the series with a 5-2 victory over ETSU on Friday night at Thomas Stadium.

Westwood (3-3) earned his third victory of the season after striking out a career-high 10 batters. Chandler Jagodzinski picked up his second save of the season Meanwhile, freshman Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) (2-3) got the loss after allowing eight hits and five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Nesselt did strike out a career-high six batters in the contest.

T.J. Gavlik, Andrew Karmeris, Evan Stermer and Joe Wielbruda each had two hits for the Ospreys. Karmeris was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Chris Carter was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Tyler Marincov finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) led the Bucs at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meanwhile, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 1-for-5 with an RBI.

UNF wasted no time as Andrew Karmeris gave the Ospreys a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out home run deep over the left field wall.

The Ospreys extended their lead with two runs on four hits in the third inning. T.J. Gavlik led off the inning with a single to left field. Then, Karmeris followed with his second RBI of the game as he drilled a double into right center to score Gavlik. Two batters later, Tyler Marincov laced an RBI double down the left field line to give the Ospreys a 3-0 lead.

ETSU answered with a run in the bottom half of the third thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Freeman. With two outs in the inning, Green was hit by a pitch and then stole second on the very next pitch to advance into scoring position. Then, Freeman drilled the 1-0 pitch into left field for his 23rd RBI of the season to make the score 3-1.

UNF added two runs on three hits in the sixth inning to take a four-run lead. Evan Stermer led off the inning by ripping the first pitch he saw from Nesselt into right field for a base-hit. Stermer was retired at second after Alex Bacon grounded into a fielder’s choice. With one out in the inning, second baseman Joe Wielbruda lined a double down the right field line to advance Bacon to third. After ETSU brought Kuehl McEachern (Mt. Dora, Fla.) into the game, left field Chris Carter drilled the 1-2 pitch right up the middle for a two-run single – giving the Ospreys a 5-1 advantage.

The Bucs cut the lead in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double off the bat of Scruggs. With two outs in the inning, the Bucs called on Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) to pinch hit and he recorded a base-hit that ricocheted off the first base bag. Scruggs followed by lining the 3-2 pitch down the left field line for his team leading 24th RBI of the season to cut the lead to 5-2.

McEachern gave the Bucs a chance as he gave a solid effort in relief of Nesselt. He allowed just two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings of work with four strikeouts.

The rubber match between ETSU and UNF will take place at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow at Thomas Stadium. ETSU will send sophomore right-hander Jake Long (Anderson, S.C.) (2-2, 2.27 ERA) to the mound for the series finale.
