Tuesday, April 10, 2012

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Apr. 10, 2012) – The ETSU men’s golf team shot its best round of the season on Tuesday to finish in second at the Coca-Cola Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

The Bucs fired a 279 (9-under) on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,648-yard layout to finish at 851 (13-under) for the tournament. ETSU was one of just three teams in the 18-school field to finish under-par for the event. In addition, the 851 total was the team’s best 54-hole score this season – breaking the previous best by 35 shots.

Charleston Southern won the event with a 282-289-279—841.  Their 279 final round tied a tournament record for low team 18-hole round and broke the record for lowest round over the final 18-holes of the tournament.  They also set the tournament record for best team finish at 841 and best team relation to par finish at -23.

ETSU had an impressive four players finish in the top-11, led by freshman Scott Gibson (Dumfries, Scotland), who finished in fifth place at 6-under-par (68-72-70—210). The fifth place finish was his top finish of the season. His previous top finish came at the Puerto Rico Classic where he tied for 19th. Fellow freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) also recorded his top finish of the season as he fired a final round 69 to finish tied for eighth at 3-under (72-72-69—213). Meanwhile, Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) finished tied for 11th at 2-under.

Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume took the top individual spot with a 69-64-71—204.  His 64 in round two set a new tournament 18-hole low and second round tournament low.  His 54-hole total of 204 also set a new tournament record and his -12 set a new tournament relation to par finish record.

ETSU finished 10 shots clear of third place Campbell (861). Wofford finished fourth (869) and Longwood rounded out the top-five at 870.

Buccaneer freshman Tom Heggarty (Cheshire, England) rounded out the ETSU scoring as he finished tied for 59th at 226 (75-75-76—226).

ETSU returns to action next Monday, April 16 for the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Championship in Braselton, Ga.
