ETSU leads A-Sun All-Sports Standings

MACON, Ga. (April 25, 2012) – East Tennessee State University holds the top spot in the Atlantic Sun All-Sports Standings with only the baseball and softball championships remaining.
The Buccaneers jumped five spots from their standing after completion of the winter sports and hold the lead in the Bill Bibb Trophy standings for 2011-12 with a total of 276 points. ETSU’s move came on the heels of pairing a men's tennis crown with the men’s outdoor track and field championship. ETSU has won the Bibb trophy the last five years.
North Florida trails in second with 252 points, having recently claimed titles in men’s golf and women’s tennis. Kennesaw State follows in third place with team titles in men’s indoor track and field and women’s golf, totaling 228 points. Belmont, the leader following completion of the winter sports, falls to fourth with 211.5 points and team titles in volleyball and men’s basketball. Florida Gulf Coast, with championships in men’s and women’s soccer and women’s basketball, is just behind the Bruins with 210 points.
A total of only 7.5 points separate the next three teams, as Jacksonville added a share of the title in women’s soccer and its seventh straight in women's indoor and track and field to place sixth with 192 points. With its men’s cross country victory, USC Upstate trails the Dolphins by only 4.5 points at 187.5. Lipscomb claimed ashare of the volleyball championship along with the women’s cross country title to occupy fifth place with 184.5 points. Stetson and Mercer follow with 165 and 142.5 points, respectively.
ETSU is back into first place in the Jesse C. Fletcher Trophy standings, the award going to the school in the A-Sun with the best overall men's sport finishing in the 2011-12 season. The Buccaneers totaled 30 points from their men’s tennis title, 27 from men’s golf, 18 from outdoor track and field, 19.5 from men’s basketball and 15 from indoor track and field for 138 points. North Florida and USC Upstate are tied for second with 112.5 points, men’s golf leading the way with 30 points for the Ospreys while cross country added 30 for the Spartans. Kennesaw State (90) and Lipscomb (88.5) round out the top five for the men, as the Owls won the indoor track and field title. Cross country led the way for the Bison (88.5) with 21 points.
Belmont and FGCU are tied for sixth with 87 points, the Bruins receiving 30 points from their men’s basketball championship and the Eagles with 27 from their men’s soccer title. Stetson follows at eighth position with 79.5 points, followed by Mercer with 78 points and Jacksonville with 48.
Jacksonville has claimed the Sherman Day Trophy in three of the last four seasons, the award going to the school in the A-Sun with the best overall women's sport finishing. JU is currently back on top of its standings with 144 points, including a share of women’s soccer along with its seventh indoor and outdoor track and field title. North Florida’s tennis victory pushes the Ospreys to second with 139.5 points, followed closely by ETSU and Kennesaw State, tied at third with 138 points. The Bucs claimed a share of women’s soccer, and the Owls won the women’s golf crown. Belmont drops to fifth with 124.5 points, its strengths in their share in the volleyball title along with strong showings in cross country, soccer and basketball. Stetson, USC Upstate and Mercer round out the women’s rankings with 85.5, 75 and 64.5 points, respectively.
Points for the all-sports standings are awarded on a descending basis in three-point increments and are established according to the number of teams participating in each sport. In team sports, points are awarded based on a school's regular season finish. In individual sports, such as cross country, golf, and track and field, points are awarded based on their A-Sun Championship standings. In the event of a tie, the two schools split the combined points.
