JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 12, 2012) – Stetson broke a scoreless tie with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and starting pitcher Josh Powers completely silenced the ETSU bats as the Hatters clinched the series with a 2-0 win over the Bucs, Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.

With both pitchers battling in an old fashioned pitcher’s duel, the Stetson offense emerged in the seventh inning with an RBI double by Mitchel Brennan. Ben Carhart led off the inning by reaching on an ETSU error and then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Jones. Then, Brennan drilled the 3-2 pitch off the wall in left center to score Carhart from second – giving Stetson the 1-0 advantage.

That was all the run support that Powers needed as he tossed 8.1 innings of shutout baseball. Powers allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out one to improve his record to 4-1 on the season. Meanwhile, Robbie Powell recorded the final out of the game to add on to his school single-season saves record with 17 now on the season.

ETSU starter John Long (Anderson, S.C.) (6-6) was phenomenal in his final home start with a complete game effort. Long allowed just six hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four in the losing effort.

Brennan and Sam Kimmel led the Stetson attack at the plate as each finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Brennan and Robert Crews (1-for-4) had the only two RBIs of the day.

Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) was the lone Buccaneer to finish with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 in the contest. In addition, his second hit of the day gave him 200 hits for his career.

Clinging to a one-run lead, Stetson added an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a RBI ground out by Crews. With one-out in the inning, Robert Bruce and Kimmel recorded back-to-back singles. Crews followed with a slow ground ball to the pitcher, which allowed Bruce to score from third.

ETSU will host Stetson in game three of the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. and it will be the final home contest of the season at Thomas Stadium.
