JOHNSON CITY (July 16, 2012) – ETSU men’s basketball head coach Murry Bartow announced Monday that the Buccaneers have completed their 2012-13 recruiting class.

Bartow said Providence College transfer Ron Giplaye (Lowell, Mass.) and true freshman Yunio Barrueta (Miami, Fla.) have both signed scholarship papers with the Bucs, and the pair represent the final two additions to the team’s roster for next season. Barrueta is already on campus and taking part in team workouts, while Giplaye will arrive in Johnson City for the start of the fall semester.

Barrueta will be eligible to play this season, while Giplaye must sit out a year after transferring from Providence, a Big East Conference school. The Bucs were in need of signing two additional players after junior college transfer Charles Hammork (New Orleans) was unable to meet the NCAA’s academic eligibility requirements.

“We are very pleased with the way we are wrapping up this recruiting class,” Bartow said. “With Charles not working out for us, we were left with two open spots. We think both Ron and Yunio will be able to help us.”

During his sophomore season at Providence, Giplaye – a 6-foot-6, 230-pound forward – played in 26 games and started in 12 contests for the Friars. He averaged 1.3 points and 2.0 rebounds a game, while shooting 46 percent from the floor. During his prep career, Giplaye averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds at Notre Dame Prep, where his team finished as the fifth-ranked squad in the nation in 2009-10.

“He’s a big body and should definitely help us on the interior,” Bartow said. “He played in the Big East, so he obviously has high major talent. His greatest strength is his ability to rebound and defend the post.”

Barrueta, a 6-foot-4, 213-pound swingman, was born in Cuba but moved to the United States with his family at the age of five. He proceeded to develop into a talented high school player, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds during his senior season while leading Hialeah Gardens to the Florida 8A state championship.

“Yunio played 8A basketball in Florida, which is the highest level in that state, and his team won the state title,” Bartow said of the first-team All-Dade County selection. “That says something to put up the numbers he did as a senior at that level. He’s very athletic and can score the basketball. In many ways he reminds us of a Mike Smith-type player with a lot of grit and tenacity on both ends of the floor.”

Giplaye and Barrueta join junior college transfers Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard (Georgetown, S.C.) and Hunter Harris (Nashville), as well as high school guards Mario Stramaglia (Birmingham, Ala.) and Lorenzo “Petey” McClain (Mobile, Ala.) as the six players comprising the team’s 2012-13 recruiting class.
