Road matchups with LSU, Iowa State and North Carolina highlights ETSU’s schedule

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 22 2012) – Once again another difficult non-conference schedule is slated to help prepare ETSU women’s basketball for league play, including 11 home games as head coach Karen Kemp released the 2012-13 Lady Bucs schedule on Wednesday morning.

The Buccaneers loaded up their non-conference schedule with six squads that appeared in post-season play last season.

“I always like to test my team in non-conference play, because we have to play the best teams in order to make us stronger, and prepare us for a difficult conference season,” said Kemp, who is entering her 19th season at the helm. “This schedule features a balance of tough games against top national powers, as well as some of the best mid-major teams in the country. We need to be ready to play night in and night out, because every team we face will be tough.”

ETSU begins the season with a pair of road games as the Lady Bucs travel to High Point on Nov. 10 and Chattanooga on Nov. 17.  The Lady Panthers are coming off a 20 win season and an appearance to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).  The Lady Mocs compiled a 22-10 season last year with an at-large berth to the WNIT.

The Blue and Gold host cross-state foe Memphis on Friday, Nov. 30 for the Lady Bucs’ home-opener.  The Tigers defeated Chattanooga, 60-59, in the first-round of last year’s WNIT.

Another two-game road swing sends the Blue and Gold to Morehead State on Dec. 2 and to Southeastern Conference foe LSU on Dec. 13.  LSU advanced to the second-round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament before falling to Penn State.

The Lady Bucs return home on Dec. 18 to face off with former Southern Conference foe Appalachian State.  The Mountaineers earned a berth to the WNIT last March, where they defeated N.C. State to advance to the third-round.  Before a quick turnaround sends ETSU to Ames, Iowa on Dec. 20 to play 2012 NCAA participant, Iowa State. The match-up with the Cyclones will be a rematch of the first-round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, where the Lady Bucs fell to ISU 85-53.

Then with little over week off for the holiday, ETSU wraps up the 2012 calendar year with a trip to North Carolina on Dec. 28.

The Lady Bucs begin league play with a three-game road swing starting with USC-Upstate on Jan. 2, then to Lipscomb (Jan. 5) and will end the road trip on Jan. 7 against new Atlantic Sun foe Northern Kentucky.

ETSU returns home for contests against Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 12) and Stetson (Jan. 14) before heading south to Kennesaw State (Jan. 19) and Mercer (Jan. 21).

The Lady Bucs will welcome their longest homestand of season from Jan. 26 through Feb. 4 when they take on North Florida (Jan. 26), Jacksonville (Jan. 28), Lipscomb (Feb. 2) and Northern Kentucky (Feb. 4).

The Blue and Gold will spend two weekends in February in Florida as they face Stetson (Feb. 9), FGCU (Feb. 11), Jacksonville (Feb. 23) and North Florida (Feb. 25).

The Lady Bucs end the regular season in Johnson City versus USC Upstate on March 2.

The 2013 A-Sun Tournament will again be played inside Mercer’s University Center. The eight-team tournament format kicks off on Wednesday, March 6 and the championship game will be played on Saturday, March 9, with the winner being awarded the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

ETSU will play a pair of exhibition games prior to the start of the regular season, beginning on Nov. 3 against Carson-Newman. The Lady Bucs also host Young Harris on Monday, Nov. 5.
