Women’s tennis advances three to singles semis, one pair to doubles final at USC Upstate Fall Classic

Saturday, September 22, 2012

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Sept. 22, 2012) – The ETSU women’s tennis team advanced three to the singles semifinals and one team to the doubles final with a great showing on Saturday at the USC Upstate Fall Classic.

Freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia), sophomore Jessica Brumit (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and junior Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) won each of their respective second round and quarterfinal matches, while the duo of Choo and Espana won its semifinal match to advance to Sunday’s doubles final. Freshman Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) added to the day, winning a singles consolation match over Presbyterian’s Caroline DeLoach.

“This was a great day overall,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It was great to see a first-time pair be so successful in Sophia [Espana] and Tessie [Choo]. Sophia [Espana] and Jess [Brumit] worked extremely hard in their singles today and were rewarded for their efforts.

“It was also great to see Sofia compete against a No. 1 player in the A-Sun. It goes to show that every spot on our team is up for grabs, and if anyone doesn’t work hard someone will be waiting to take their spot.”

Choo and Espana will take on Wofford’s Mareli Sanchez and Lucy Schmerhorn in Sunday’s doubles final at noon. The singles semifinals begin at 9 a.m., with the finals scheduled for 1 p.m. Taking up three of the four semifinal spots, two Buccaneers will square off against one another as Espana takes on Brumit in one matchup. Choo battles Constanze Kuerten, who defeated Kelsey Williams (Sunbury, Australia) in the other semi.
