Friday, September 28, 2012

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Sept. 28, 2012) – Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa Greece) and junior Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) highlighted the ETSU women’s tennis team’s performance on Friday at the Hokie Fall Invite, winning their singles matches and advancing to Saturday’s second round.

Kolovou, competing in Flight A, took out William & Mary’s Anik Cepeda in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, while Espana worked her way past UMBC’s Shannon Cleary in Flight D, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Kolovou is lined up to play UNC Wilmington’s Angie Sekely in Saturday’s second round, while Espana will battle Radford’s Taylor Fay.

In doubles, each Buccaneer pair won their respective first round matches, but proceeded to fall from the main draw in the quarterfinals. Kolovou and Larn McShane (Hobart Tasmania, Australia) beat out Sekely and Blank in their first match, 8-6, but fell to Armstrong Atlantic’s Kritickova and Filipovski, 8-1. Espana paired with Salma Dahbi (Marrrakech, Morocco) in Flight B, winning round one, 8-4, and falling in a close second round to UNCW, 9-8 (7-5).

“We had a decent day,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “It was great to see Sofia keep her winning streak alive, and see Antonia pull out her first three-set match. I also thought we played solid doubles.”

Kolovou begins Saturday’s second-round action at 10:30 a.m., while Espana is set to go at noon.
