Pugh, Meronk to play at World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 3, 2012) – Sophomore Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and freshman Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) have been selected to play for their respective countries at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship in Antalya, Turkey.

The four-day tournament will be held at the Cornelia Golf Club and Antalya Golf Club (PGA Sulton Course) from Thursday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 7. The final round of the men’s championship will be played at the Antalya Golf Club, with the winning team claiming the 34th annual Eisenhower Trophy.

Pugh was one of three golfers selected to represent Wales as he currently ranks 184th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. In August, Pugh rallied to win the European Amateur Championship to earn a spot in the 2013 Open Championship. Following the win at the Carton House Golf Club, Pugh was named to Golf World’s Top 50 Players to Watch list in 2012-13. This marks the second appearance in the World Amateur Team Championship for Pugh as he tied for 57th two years ago in Argentina. Overall, Wales finished in a four-way tie for 21st.

“This event happens every two years, so it’s quite an honor to go play for Wales,” said Pugh. “This will be a great experience playing over in Turkey but I’ve been fortunate to be in this tournament before, so I know what it’s like. It’s tough to make the team since only three players from each country are selected, but I’ve worked very hard this summer. I think winning the European Amateur Championship helped me cement a spot on the team.”

Meronk will be making his first appearance in the World Amateur Championship this upcoming weekend in Turkey. The Buccaneer freshman has two collegiate tournaments under his belt heading into the World Amateur, with his best finish coming in the season-opening Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Meronk tied for 27th in Chapel Hill, N.C., while he posted his lowest round of the year – an ever-par 71 back on Sept. 21 at the Rudolph Mason Championship. Prior to arriving at ETSU, Meronk was the No. 1-ranked player in 2011 according to the World Junior Golf Rankings. He locked up the No. 1 ranking by finishing second in the World Junior Golf Series season ending Gate American Junior in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., while Meronk also won the Polish Junior Championship and finished runner-up at the Polish Amateur Championship in 2011.

“This will be an awesome experience, because I’ll be facing the best players from each country,” added Meronk. “It’s a big advantage to play for my country and help my team perform well. This is my first time playing in the World Amateur Championship, but I have played in the European Amateur Championship. I believe playing in those tournaments will help, but this is a much bigger stage so it’ll be a good experience for me.
