York, Marnon receive MVP honors

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 15, 2012) - On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Thomas Stadium, the Blue team used dominating efforts by a pair of freshmen as left-handed pitcher Kevin Marnon (Shelby Township, Mich.) and third baseman Trey York (Knox, Tenn.) led Blue to a series clinching 5-1 victory in the Blue/Gold World Series.

Marnon only allowed two hits in five innings of work while only needing 55 pitches to do so. Fellow freshmen Timmy Farrell (Okeechobee, Fla.) and Kameron Miller (Crestview, Fla.) came out of the bullpen to secure the victory.

Just like they did Friday night, the Blue team struck early as Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) led off the game with a walk and scored on an RBI single by York.

In the second inning, the Blue team strung together three doubles, leading to a pair of runs coming across the plate. A leadoff double by Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) followed by an RBI double by freshman Andrew Lasure (Stanford, Ky.) scored the first run of the inning, while Green doubled later in the frame and was brought home once again by the red-hot York.

The Blue team added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings when Green tripled and was knocked in on a single by freshman Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.), and freshman Kevin Phillips (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the fifth and final Blue run on Daniel Carrier’s (Cincinnati, Ohio) sacrifice fly in the seventh. Phillips led off the frame with a single.

Gold was led by Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.), Dylan Powers (Blue Ridge, Va.), and Daniel Tucker (Hendersonville, Tenn.) – who all had a pair of hits on Sunday.

The Blue Team was led by Green, York, and Riopedre as they all recorded two-hit efforts in game three.

In the end, York was named the Most Valuable Player of the series as he went 7-for-9 with six RBIs, while Marnon took home Most Valuable Pitcher honors after tossing five solid innings on Sunday.

This weekend marked the end of the fall season for the Bucs.
