Mitchell garners preseason All-Atlantic Sun honor

MACON, Ga. (Oct. 18, 2012) – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its 2012 preseason women’s basketball polls and all-conference honors Thursday afternoon, and the Lady Bucs were tied for fourth with Jacksonville by the coaches and fifth by the media. Meanwhile, junior Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) was selected to the preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team.
Mitchell is the Lady Bucs top returning scorer and rebounder and finished ninth in the A-Sun with 12.2 points per game and second with 8.9 boards per game last year. She earned her second-straight Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun honor last March. Mitchell is on pace to become the 21st Lady Bucs to join the 1,000 point club as she scored 367 points last year and 347 as a freshman.
Stetson’s Victoria McGowan was voted Preseason Player of the Year, while Florida Gulf Coast’s Brittany Kennedy garnered Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Stetson led the all-conference team with three selections, followed by FGCU with two. Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, and USC Upstate all had one player on the list.
In the polls, Stetson was picked first in the coaches poll and FGCU was tabbed first in the media poll. The Hatters received eight first-place votes (98 points) by the coaches, while FGCU grabbed two first-place votes (89 points). North Florida earned 68 points for third-place as ETSU and Jacksonville received 64 points apiece for a tie for fourth. Meanwhile, in the media poll, FGCU received 14 first-place votes (181 points) and the Hatters grabbed five first-place votes (175 points) for second-place. Kennesaw State was selected third with 127 points while coaches picked the Owls sixth. North Florida earned 107 votes, good for fourth as ETSU and Jacksonville grabbed 103 votes for the fifth spot.
The Lady Bucs open the 2012-13 season with an exhibition game against Carson-Newman on Saturday, Nov. 3. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center.
