WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Oct. 18, 2012) – Redshirt freshman Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) won two singles matches on Thursday at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, earning a spot in Friday’s main draw action.

Choo defeated Louisville’s Valentina Schneider in her first qualifying match, and secured her spot in the main bracket with a come-from-behind victory over Southeast Missouri’s Elizabeth Nyenwe, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0. The young Buccaneer will take on Miami’s (OH) Nimisha Mohan Friday at 5 p.m.

"It was great to see Tessie [Choo] gain some confidence today and get through qualifying," ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. "However, today was a real wake-up call for the team. We learned where we are and where we need to be. If we want to continue to be successful, we'll have to work a lot harder."

Junior Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) was not as fortunate, falling a match shy of qualifying for the main draw. Dahbi defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Carmen Rodriguez in straight sets to start the day, but fell in three sets to Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to end her run.

Senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) and junior Larn McShane (Hombart Tasmania, Australia) were also in action on the doubles courts, but fell in their first qualifier to Purdue’s Claudia Escribens and Krisztina Kapitany, 8-2.

Thursday’s results leave ETSU with Kolovou, Choo and freshman Anna Gerbasi (Mexico City, Mexico) in the singles round of 64. Choo and Gerbasi are the lone ETSU tandem set to compete in the 32-team doubles draw.
