Young Buccaneer duo to play No. 1 seed in semis

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Oct. 20, 2012)Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated another seeded duo on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, earning the ETSU women’s tennis duo a spot in the semifinals.

After winning two matches on Friday, including an opening-round victory over the No. 4 seed from Purdue, Choo and Gerbasi began Saturday in the doubles quarterfinals. The young Buccaneer duo – Choo a redshirt freshman and Gerbasi a true freshman – kept the run alive on day three, defeating the No. 6 seed of Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira from Vanderbilt 9-8 (7-5).

“Tessie [Choo] and Anna showed some real character and maturity today in doubles,” ETSU assistant coach Travis Sandlant said. “They held their nerve to close out the match, which was great to see.”

Senior Anotonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) was ETSU’s remaining hope in the singles draw, but fell in the second round to Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher, 6-4, 6-3. Choo and Gerbasi suffered the same fate in the singles consolation bracket.

Choo and Gerbasi take on the No. 1 seed in Sunday’s doubles semifinals, set to square off against Tennessee’s Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely at 9:30 a.m.

“I feel we have a great shot tomorrow against UT,” Sandlant added. “If Tessie and Anna continue where they left off today, it will be exciting to see the outcome.”
