Men’s tennis bumped from USTA/ITA Regional Championships
Sunday, October 21, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 21, 2012) – Day three of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships did not go as well as the ETSU men’s tennis team would have liked, as the Buccaneers were eliminated from contention.
The spotlight was on doubles for ETSU on Sunday, with Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela), Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) all in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Ramirez and Varon were defeated by Lousiville’s Alex Gomet and Albert Wagner, while Bandres and Ordeig were downed by Memphis’ David O’Leary and Joe Salisbury 8-5.
Junior Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) was the Buccaneers’ last hope in singles, but lost his third-round consolation match to Xavier’s Adam Krull, 6-3, 6-4.
“We had some flashes of good tennis in doubles, but our singles play leaves a lot to be desired,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said.
