HIGH POINT, N.C. (Nov. 9, 2012) – ETSU women’s basketball team opens its regular season with a trip to High Point on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Millis Center.

THE SERIES
The Lady Bucs lead the all-time series, 2-1, and lost their last meeting in 2003, 53-51, at the Provident Bank Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The first two meetings took place in 1983 and 1986. In the 2003 contest, 1,000-point scorer Tiffani Mayes led the way for the Lady Bucs with double-double. She scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds. Current ETSU assistant coach, Brooke Wilhoit, dished out a game-high four assists and added two points and three defensive rebounds.

LAST TIME OUT
ETSU wrapped up its exhibition season on Monday with a 79-59 win over Young Harris. Junior Destiny Mitchell led the Lady Bucs with 25 points and four steals and added nine rebounds. Newcomer Serena Clark owned the boards as she ripped down 19 rebounds and added nine points.  Junior Shawn Randall led ETSU’s bench with 14 points and four assists.  The Lady Bucs opened the preseason with a 82-52 exhibition victory against Carson-Newman last Saturday.  Mitchell recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds as Clark was one rebound away from a double-double as she netted 16 points.

SCOUTING THE LADY BUCS
Head coach Karen Kemp returns eight letterwinners, including starters Tosha Austin (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Brianna Bogard (Georgetown, Texas) and Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.). Mitchell earned preseason all-Atlantic Sun honors last month and is the Lady Bucs’s top returning scorer and rebounder. The Bluffton, Ga., native averaged 12.2 points and 8.9 boards per game to earn her second-straight Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun honor last March. Mitchell is on pace to become the 21st Lady Buc to join the 1,000 point club as she scored 367 points last year and 347 as a freshman. ETSU will have four newcomers who will wear the Blue and Gold for the first time, including redshirt-sophomore transfer Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) and freshmen Jasmine Kemp (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Imani Martinez (Annandale, N.J.) and Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.). Redshirt-sophomore transfer Tiana Burley (Camilla, Ga.) will be eligible once the fall semester grades are reported because NCAA transfer rules.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
High Point is coming off a 56-42 exhibition win over Winston-Salem State on Sunday.  Head coach DeUnna Hendrix enters her first season at the helm of the Panther’s basketball program.  Hendrix is very familiar with Lady Bucs because she was previously the assistant coach at Jacksonville for the past four years.  The Panthers finished second in the Big South last year and earned a trip to the WNIT.  High Point returns three starts and eight letterwinners, and guard Erin Reynolds and center Cheyenne Parker are the Panthers key returners. Reynolds averaged 15.9 points and 4.3 assists per game last year and Parker averaged a double-double with 13 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.

NEXT UP FOR ETSU
The Lady Bucs travels to in-state foe Chattanooga on Nov. 17. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. in McKenzie Arena.
