JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2012) – ETSU men’s basketball head coach Murry Bartow announced Thursday that the Buccaneers have made their first signing for the 2013-14 recruiting class.

A.J. Merriweather, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound swingman from South Side High School in Jackson, Tenn., signed his national letter of intent with the Bucs on Wednesday. Merriweather – who averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds a game as a junior – was an all-district and all-region selection a year ago, while also posting the highest grade point average on his team.

“We’re thrilled to have A.J. as part of our program because he really fits everything we look for in a player,” Bartow said. “Basketball wise he’s 6-4 and long, he’s a great defender, he’s really athletic, and he’s versatile enough to play multiple positions. Academically, he’s a super student and a fine young man, and even more important he’s coming from a great family and a good high school program.”

Merriweather said there were many reasons he chose the Bucs.

“I decided on ETSU because I loved the staff, the academic support, and all the guys on the team,” Merriweather said. “The style of play there was also important to me because I like to play fullcourt, intense defense, and I like getting out and running on offense.”

When asked what ETSU fans can expect from him, Merriweather was straight to the point.

“Consistency first, and expect a player that you can rely on to do whatever the team needs,” he said.

With a season-ending injury to senior post Lukas Poderis (Port Richey, Fla.) and the expectation that Poderis will return for a fifth season next year, the Bucs now have just two open scholarships for the 2013-14 class.
