Lady Bucs handed worst loss of season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Dec. 28, 2012) – An 18-7 UNC run to close out the first half and a subsequent 17-0 run to start the second half was too much for the Lady Bucs to handle as they dropped a 85-44 decision to the nationally-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday afternoon inside Carmichael Arena.

With the loss, ETSU drops its record to 2-5 and suffered its third-straight loss of 20 points or more, while No. 16 North Carolina improved its record to 12-1.

“The game was a great opportunity for the team to play a team like North Carolina with their talent and being in the top-25, head coach Karen Kemp said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge, but we played hard for the majority of the game and I am happy with that. We did good things, but we have many things we need to improve on for upcoming conference play.”

In each team’s final non-conference game of the season, the Lady Bucs and Tar Heels traded baskets early in the half before UNC turned up the pressure. This pressure resulted in 23 Lady Buc turnovers and 24 points off these turnovers. UNC ended the half on an 18-7 run, increasing the lead to 16, 41-25, going into halftime.

The Tar Heels started the second half on a 17-0 run over the first four minutes which essentially put the game out of reach for the Lady Bucs. ETSU was outscored 44-19 in the second half.

UNC got a game-high 18 points, nine assists and four steals from guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, while forward Xylina McDaniel pitched in 11 points. Meanwhile, redshirt-sophomore Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) added nine points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) contributed nine points and six rebounds off the bench. Freshman guard Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga) also had nine points, while junior guard Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Shooting 43.3 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from 3-point range, UNC also forced ETSU in to a season-high 36 turnovers, adding 36 points off these turnovers, and shot 72.4 percent from the foul line.

Meanwhile, ETSU shot a disappointing 27.7 percent from the field and managed only one make out 13 attempts from 3-point land. The Lady Bucs did hold an advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Tar Heels, 47-39. ETSU has now committed 25-plus turnovers in back-to-back games.

The Lady Bucs will open the New Year and Atlantic Sun play with a trip to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on the USC-Upstate Spartans on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 5 p.m.
