Two-day meet hosted by JDL Fast Track

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams return to action this weekend, as they head for the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Hilton Garden Invitational.

The meet begins Friday at noon with the 60m dash portion of the heptathlon. Opening day concludes with the 5000m around 8:30 p.m., before starting back up Saturday at 10 a.m., with the men’s and women’s 60m hurdles. The two-day meet comes to a close following the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, scheduled to begin around 7:10 p.m.

Student-athletes from about 70 men’s and women’s collegiate teams are set to compete at the meet. Those schools include Appalachian State, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, High Point, North Carolina State, Radford, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, USC Upstate, Wake Forest, Winthrop and Wofford.

“We look forward to this weekend’s meet as we close in on the conference championships,” Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “We had a very successful outing at the Niswonger Invitational and I look forward to seeing continued improvement across the board after our two-week training cycle.”

Among the student-athletes competing for ETSU is two-time Atlantic Sun Track Athlete of the Week Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic). At the Niswonger, Jalovy won the 800m on day one and the mile run on day two. Jalovy will be competing in the men’s mile this weekend, looking to improve upon his time of 4:14.98 which ranks No. 2 in the conference.

On the women’s side, A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week from Jan. 16, Chelsea Clark (Fairmont, W.V.), will take her shot in the 3000m. Clark enters the event seeded No. 3 among all competitors with a time of 9:59.80. Clark has yet to compete in the event this year, but will rank first in the A-Sun should she run faster than 10:10.82, the mark currently posted by Jacksonville’s Svenja Meyer.

Although the Buccaneers will boast some standouts from the season so far, they will not be traveling all the student-athletes Watts would have liked.

“We will hold out several key student-athletes due to some nagging injuries and hope to have them back in time for next week’s meet,” Watts said. “More importantly, we want them ready to toe the line at the A-Sun Championships.”

“Regardless, we have a full slate of events over the weekend and I'm particularly interested in how K'vonte [Scott], Evaristo [Valls] and Katka [Vodova] will do in there multi-event competitions.”

Sophomores K’Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Evaristo Valls (Elch, Spain) will look to perform well in the heptathlon. Neither has competed in the event this year, but Scott is the current ETSU record-holder with 4.953 points at last year’s Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships. Women’s sophomore Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) will also be competing in her first pentathlon of the indoor season. Last year, Vodova took second in the event at the A-Sun Indoor Championships to be named Second Team All-Conference.

“Overall, I expect improvements and a strong competitive effort put forth from the entire team,” Watts concluded.

Live stats will be provided via TimingInc.com. Results will also be posted to JDLFastTrack.com. Daily recaps and updates on ETSU’s performances will be available on ETSUBucs.com
