Women’s tennis faces tough weekend vs. Akron, Oregon

Nationally ranked singles and doubles players await Lady Bucs
AKRON, Ohio (Feb. 14, 2013) – It may be Valentine’s Day weekend, but the ETSU women’s tennis team expects little love as it gets set to take on Akron and No. 69 Oregon inside the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron, Ohio.
ETSU (2-0) first takes on Akron (3-5) – all five of the Zips’ losses coming to ranked opponents – Friday at 1 p.m., followed by undefeated Oregon (7-0) Saturday at 9 a.m.
The dual season began Feb. 3 for the Lady Bucs, where they handily defeated Middle Tennessee State University, 4-1, at the Nashboro Village Athletic Club. ETSU’s next match came this past Tuesday, rolling over Liberty, 4-0, on the road in Lynchburg, Va.
The Lady Buccaneers will have their hands full to keep the streak alive.
In its first pair of victories, ETSU has seen senior Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece) walk away victorious in the top singles match, but she will most likely go up against Oregon’s Patricia Skowronski who is 7-0 and slotted No. 101 in the ITA singles rankings.
The Lady Bucs have also seen freshman duo Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) and Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) begin the dual season 2-0 in the top doubles spot. Awaiting them are Akron’s Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria, currently ranked No. 43 as a duo by the ITA and riding a six-match winning streak. During the streak, Pantusart and Jogasuria have defeated nationally ranked doubles teams from both Missouri and Princeton, but Choo and Gerbasi have had their own success against the nation’s best, defeating Oklahoma State’s then-14th ranked team of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narrattana during the fall.
Newcomers Sofia Espana (Mexico City, Mexico) and Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) will look to keep their winning ways alive. As a duo, Espana and Dahbi have won their last two matches. Individually, Espana has won her last two contests while Dahbi sits on a four-match winning streak. Choo holds the team’s longest active winning streak, having won her last five singles battles.
