Monday, February 18, 2013
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 18, 2013) – After a pair of freshman led the ETSU men’s golf team in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic, sophomores Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) took charge on Monday as the Buccaneer duo posted the team’s lowest second round scores from the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club.
Pugh and Gibson both carded a 1-over-par 73 and moved up the leaderboard heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Pugh – who shot a 75 in the first round – moved into a tie for 42nd with a 36-hole total of 4-over 148. Meanwhile, Gibson made the biggest turnaround as he shaved nine strokes off his first round score and bounced back nicely after bogeying three of his first four holes on Monday. After regaining his composure, Gibson played the final 14 holes at 2-under-par and has a two-round score of 155.
On the team leaderboard, Alabama – the first round leader – now has company at the top as the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide are tied with No. 40 Oklahoma at 19-under 557. Likewise, Oklahoma’s Eduardo Castiello and Virginia Tech’s Mikey Moyers are tied for the individual lead at 7-under 137.
As a team, the Bucs are in 11th with a team score of 593 (296-297), and sit six shots back of No. 31 North Carolina and seven strokes back of 2010 and 2011 NCAA Champion Augusta State.
Freshmen Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) – who led the Blue and Gold on Sunday – enter the final round tied for 34th and 42nd. After firing a 1-under 71 in the first round, Kristjansson followed that up with 3-over 75 and is in a three-way tie for 34th, while Hickman is grouped with Pugh at 42nd.
The third and final round begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, with ETSU being paired with North Carolina and North Carolina State.
