RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 18, 2013) – Following a disappointing first round, sophomore Scott Gibson (Southerness, Scotland) turned things around to finish strong at the Puerto Rico Classic from the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club.
Gibson – who carded an 82 in Sunday’s opening round – followed up and played the final 36 holes at even-par. After posting a 1-over-par 73 in the second round, Gibson finished the tournament with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. Gibson got off to a rough start early on Tuesday as he was shooting 3-over through the first 12 holes, but the Buccaneer sophomore finally got in the zone as he birdied four of the final six holes to finish tied for 55th with a three-round score of 226.
Meanwhile, freshman Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) led the Blue and Gold in the tournament as he finished in a three-way tie for 36th at 4-over 220.
In team scoring, No. 5 Alabama outlasted No. 40 Oklahoma as the Crimson Tide defeated the Sooners by seven strokes. Alabama fired a 14-under on Tuesday and finished the tournament at 33-under-par 831, while Oklahoma registered a 7-under in the final round and totaled a team score of 26-under 838.
Individually, North Carolina State’s Albin Choi won the title by two strokes over Oklahoma’s Will Kropp. Choi, the 20th-ranked golfer in the Golfstat rankings, moved from fourth to first on Tuesday by tallying a 7-under 65 and finished the Puerto Rico Classic at 12-under-par 204. Kropp also made a huge jump but ran out of holes to catch Choi, as the Sooner entered the day in ninth to finish in a three-way tie for second. Kropp also posted a 65 in the final round.
The Bucs finished 11th with a team score of 883 (296-297-290) and placed ahead of No. 31 North Carolina by four strokes.
ETSU doesn’t return to action until March 11 when the Bucs travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the General Hackler Invitational.
