JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2013) – ETSU senior guard Jarvis Jones (Memphis) has enjoyed plenty of success during his five years as a member of the ETSU men’s basketball team. Unfortunately, his last memory of the Dome will not be a good one.

In front of 4,389 fans on Senior Night, Jones and the Buccaneers were unable to overcome a hot shooting start by the USC Upstate Spartans and ultimately dropped their regular season finale 88-56 Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference basketball action at the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

Suffering their worst conference defeat in terms of point margin since joining the A-Sun in 2005-06, the Bucs dropped to 10-21 overall, 8-10 in league play. Meanwhile, USC Upstate improved to 15-16, 9-9 on the season.

“That’s just very embarrassing, and honestly we didn’t see it coming,” said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. “We had a great win at Jacksonville in our last game and we had a great week of practice, but for whatever reason we had a complete lack of energy from the start. It’s pretty obvious we got whipped in every aspect of the game.”

Things did not go well for the Bucs from the beginning of the game. Hitting five 3-pointers in the opening five minutes of the game, USC Upstate quickly jumped ahead by 14 points at 19-5 and never allowed the Bucs to cut the deficit closer than six points in the first half.

Despite that tough start, the Bucs trailed 39-25 at the break and still had a shot at the win – especially with ETSU having rallied for multiple victories in the second half this season. However, it didn’t work out that way this time.

In fact, the Spartans opened the second half by outscoring the Bucs 36-9 and simply dominated in every possible way. For the game, Upstate shot 49 percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the foul line. The Spartans also out-rebounded ETSU 42-29, and enjoyed a 36-22 edge on points in the paint, while ETSU shot just 35 percent from the floor.

Swingman Torrey Craig led the Upstate attack with a game-high 26 points, while guard Ty Greene netted 17 points, guard Adrian Rodgers added 12, and forward Ricardo Glenn pitched in 10. For ETSU, junior forward Hunter Harris (Nashville) scored a team-high 13 points, while Jones finished with 12.

The Bucs will now wait to learn of their seeding for next week’s A-Sun Tournament in Macon, Ga., which will be determined following Saturday’s play in league action. For more on ETSU men’s basketball, visit and click on the men’s hoops link.
