Highest ranking since 2011

SKILLMAN, N.J. (March 5, 2013) – The ETSU men’s tennis team moved up four spots to No. 56 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Team Rankings, as released by the association on Tuesday.

The ranking is ETSU’s (5-4, 1-0 A-Sun) highest since being No. 55 the week of May 2, 2011. During the 2012 season, ETSU’s highest mark was No. 58 in the association’s first poll of the year.

The Buccaneers’ latest ranking comes in the aftermath of opening Atlantic Sun play with a, 5-2, win on the road against USC Upstate last Friday. The win moved ETSU’s record back above .500 against what has been a very tough schedule thus far.

Three of the Bucs’ five wins have come against opponents who are either currently ranked or were ranked at the time of the match. The first of those was ETSU’s first victory of the season, a 4-2 win against an Oklahoma State team which currently sits at No. 64. The other two came against then-No. 71 UL-Lafayette, 4-2, and then-No. 60 Georgia State, 4-0.

On the flip side, ETSU’s four defeats have come against quality competition. In fact, all four losses have come against teams currently ranked relatively high in the ITA poll. The first came in the season opener, losing, 7-0, to a Wake Forest team which is currently at No. 22. The other three defeats with the opponents’ current ranking have come to No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 33 Nebraska.

Combined, ETSU holds a record of 3-4 against opponents that are either currently ranked in the top 75 or were at the time of the match.

ETSU has some time off before its next match when it opens the new tennis courts Friday, March 22, against A-Sun foe North Florida.
