Breaking Surinamese 100m national record propels the senior
MACON, Ga. (March 20, 2013) – Senior Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname) of the ETSU men’s track & field team was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Alberg earned the honor by breaking a Surinamese national record while blowing away the competition in the 100m dash at Charlotte 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, March 16. The Suriname native’s gold medal time of 10.31 bested the previous 100m record time in his home country of 10.32 set on May 15, 1982 by Sammy Monsels in Modesto, Calif. In addition at the 49er Classic, Alberg also competed as a member of the men’s 4x100 team that placed third with a time of 41.15. The senior’s amazing performances were just part of a strong overall showing for the Buccaneers’ track and field program which placed teams and individual student-athletes in the top three in 14 events in Charlotte.
Following his record-breaking performance, Alberg holds the edge as the outdoor leader in the A-Sun in the 100m dash and also occupies the second slot in the conference in the 200m. Nationally, the senior’s scorching mark of 10.31 is the second-fastest recorded time in the outdoor season this spring, topped only by a dash of 10.20, but with a wind aid of 2.3, by the University of Georgia’s Johnathan Smith at the Georgia Relays/UGA Alumni Meet also on March 16.
The honor is Alberg’s second career Track Athlete of the Week Award and his first of this young outdoor campaign.
