ETSU women begin strong in field and multi-events

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (March 22, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams continued the outdoor season on Friday at the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic, highlighted by a strong performance on the women’s side on day one at the Western Carolina Catamount Athletic Complex.

“The weather conditions limited our progress today and made for some difficult competition,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We got some solid work in overall and we hope for a little better weather tomorrow.”

After beginning her first outdoor season with a strong showing at the Charlotte 49er Classic last weekend, freshman Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) carried the momentum over to start the day at the Catamount Classic. In the women’s discus throw, the rookie hurler launched a throw of 42.59m, placing second, and followed this up with another second-place showing with launch of 37.08m in the javelin throw. Tobis was joined by fellow freshman Tyesha Jones (Nashville, Tenn.) who also continued her momentum from last weekend with 38.78m toss and fifth-place standing in the discus.

Through four events in the women’s heptathlon, ETSU has been led by Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) in her first action of this year’s outdoor campaign. Vodova scored in the top three in three events including first in the shot put with a throw of 10.92m, second in the high jump with a leap of 1.57m and third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.02.

“I was pleased with Verena’s effort in the discus,” Watts said. “It was also nice seeing Sammie [Dunlay] get solid marks in the triple jump.”

On the men’s side, the Bucs got the usual consistent showings from sophomores K’Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Evaristo Valls (Elche, Spain) in the first five events of the decathlon. In the 100m dash, Scott placed second with a time of 11.50, followed by Valls in third with 11.65. Scott also notched a leap of 6.17m in the long jump which scored second, while Valls also placed second with a shot put throw of 10.31m.

ETSU ended day one with the women sitting at second place overall with 25 points, while the men stand in 11th place with four points.

The Bucs will conclude competition with day two at the Catamount Classic on Saturday with the remaining events of the men’s decathlon set to begin at 10 a.m. Running events will then start at 11:30 a.m. with the women's 1500m run.
