Senior right-hander tosses third shutout, seventh complete game of the season

MACON, Ga. (April 15, 2013) – All season, Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) has been a force to be reckoned with on the mound, and the senior right-hander was finally recognized for his dominating efforts as the Buccaneer hurler landed Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week honors, announced the league office on Monday.

Doane – who tossed 11.0 scoreless innings this past week – recorded his third shutout and NCAA-leading seventh complete game of the year Friday night against Lipscomb. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native struck out a career-high eight batters and scattered five hits to the Bisons. Earlier in the week, Doane tossed two innings of shutout ball against Tennessee out of the bullpen. For the week, the righty tossed 152 pitches with 101 of them going for strikes.

Following his complete game performance on Friday night, Doane has now pitched 75 of the total 81.0 innings in his nine starts, and lowered his ERA from 2.22 to 1.96 on the campaign. Meanwhile, Doane is the active A-Sun career leader for complete games (8), while his three shutouts are tied for the lead in the conference. In addition, Doane is one shutout away from tying Jeff Andrews (1978-81) for the ETSU single-season and career record.

Doane, a criminal justice major, becomes the second Buccaneer hurler to win A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors this season, resulting in the first time since 2011 where ETSU has had two different pitchers receive the weekly accolade.

Overall, the Bucs (21-12, 10-5 A-Sun) recorded its second straight weekend sweep, marking the first time since 2009 the Blue and Gold have accomplished the feat and the first since 2004 when ETSU swept back-to-back conference series.

Doane and the Bucs gear up for busy stretch as ETSU plays 14 games in 19 days starting Wednesday night at The Citadel. First pitch with the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
