Evans paces ETSU trio as Buccaneers lead at A-Sun Tourney

Monday, April 15, 2013

JEKYLL ISLAND, S.C. (April 15, 2013) – Junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) carded an impressive round of 5-under-par 67 to top the individual leaderboard while also powering the ETSU women’s golf team to the lead following first round play in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships Monday at the Jekyll Island Golf Club’s Pine Lakes Course.

Evans is currently tied for the top spot with Jacksonville’s Jessica Welch, while the Bucs hold a six-stroke advantage over the Dolphins for first place on the team leaderboard.

While Evans matched her career low with her round, the Bucs also got strong efforts from sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) and freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia). Wahl fired a 1-under-par 71 to tie for third, while Chin is currently tied for 10th following a round of 2-over 74.

“It was a solid performance today by our team, and I’m very proud of Sian’s play today as her 67 really led us,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We will reexamine our course management this evening, make changes where necessary, and come out tomorrow with the same confident game plan and patience.”

Along with Evans, Wahl and Chin, the Bucs also got a solid performance from junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain), who fired a 3-over-par 75 to finish tied for 14th. Meanwhile, senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) is currently tied for 31st.

Second round action at the A-Sun Championships will be played on Tuesday, followed by the third and final round on Wednesday. The Bucs are attempting to win their second A-Sun title after capturing their first championship back in 2008. ETSU has also had three individual champions over the last five years.
