Men’s tennis puts five on postseason lists
MACON, Ga. (April 18, 2013) – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its men’s tennis postseason honors and awards on Thursday, with ETSU landing two first teamers in senior Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Rogerio Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
The Buccaneers also had three All-Atlantic Sun Second Team singles members, including senior Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), junior Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) and redshirt freshman Ricardo Pabon (Bogota, Columbia). Bandres and Ribeiro were announced as second team doubles honorees as well, along with the pairing of Ordeig and Pabon. Pabon was also honored on the all-freshman team.
Continuing its tradition of celebrating achievements both on and off the courts, the A-Sun also revealed its academic all-conference team. Three Buccaneers made the seven-man list with the likes of Ribeiro, Pabon and Ordeig. All were unanimous selections with Ribeiro carrying a 3.71 GPA in business, Pabon a 3.85 GPA in management & marketing, while Ordeig boasts a 3.78 in psychology.
Bandres’ first team honors result from a 6-2 singles mark and 8-0 doubles mark in A-Sun play, running the table in doubles alongside Ribeiro. The two ride a nine-match winning streak into this weekend’s championships. Meanwhile, Ribeiro went 8-0 in singles, completing the conference season flawless on both the singles in doubles courts.
The first team honors are Bandres’ third in as many years. The senior has been on the A-Sun postseason list in all four of his seasons at ETSU, being named to the all-freshman team in 2010. Ribeiro was named to the all-freshman team last year.
Ramirez, Ordeig and Pabon combined for a 22-1 mark in A-Sun singles play. Ramirez had the only loss, still posting an impressive 7-1 mark, and was undefeated at No. 3 singles at 7-0. Ordeig was the other 8-0 Buccaneer, earning all eight of his wins on court five where he was also 11-4 through the spring season. Pabon was 7-0 to also be on the all-freshman team, earning his victories on court six and posting a 9-4 mark in that matchup on the dual season.
Ordeig and Pabon went 6-2 in conference play and 9-6 on the spring to earn the second team doubles honors. The duo plays No. 3 matches and rides a six-match winnings streak.
Ramirez’s postseason honors are his second, being named to the second team in 2012 as well. Ordeig makes his third appearance after being named to the second team last year and all-freshman team in 2011. Pabon’s honors are his first.
The Buccaneers look ahead to hosting the 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament Championships this weekend from the ETSU Tennis Complex. ETSU is the No. 2 seed and begins play in the semifinals on Saturday.
