Faceoff with No. 2 UNF

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 20, 2013) – The top-seeded ETSU women’s tennis team is headed back to the Atlantic Sun Tennis Championship Finals for the eighth consecutive year, defeating No. 4 Stetson, 4-0, Saturday afternoon from the ETSU Tennis Complex.

ETSU (14-5, 8-0 A-Sun) and Stetson (11-10, 5-3 A-Sun) contested a tight doubles point, but the Lady Buccaneers proved too much in singles. A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Lyn Yee Choo (Kuching, Malaysia) made easy work of Sara Lazarevic,, 6-3, 6-3, to lead the charge, followed by wins from Anna Gerbasi (Caracas, Venezuela) and from All-Atlantic Sun First Team selection Antonia Kolovou (Larisa, Greece).

Kolovou won the battle of first-team selections, downing Andrea Crespo to bring on the celebration, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. The lone ETSU senior improves to 15-3 on the spring and 23-11 overall.

The Lady Buccaneers will face No. 2 North Florida (15-4, 7-1 A-Sun) in Sunday's A-Sun Championship Finals at 10 a.m. UNF defeated No. 3 USC Upstate, 4-0, in Saturday afternoon's second semifinal.

“Today we showed off the talent that we have. On a positive note we clinched it and advanced to the finals, but at the same time it got complicated,” Director of ETSU Tennis Yaser Zaatini said. “Choo and Gerbasi dropped the doubles match and put us in a bind, but we pulled through at two and three. It made for a much more relaxing singles competition.”

The day did not get off to the start ETSU’s top pair of Choo and Gerbasi would have liked. The ITA’s No. 63 doubles team suffered its first loss in 13 sets, falling to Stetson’s Jen Miller and Diana Bukajeva, 8-3, and giving the Hatters an early advantage.

Juniors Giulia Andreazza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Sofia Espana (Mexico City) got it back. The junior duo led the entire way on court three against Sara Lazarevic and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell, finishing off the set, 8-5.

The point then came down to court two, which was well from completion. Kolovou and junior Salma Dahbi (Marrakech, Morocco) were down 3-2 to Lindsey Cable and Eveline Lepinay, rallying to win four of the next five games and go up a break, 6-4. The two sides held in each of the next two service games and the Lady Buc duo broke for the doubles clincher, 8-5.

Choo avenged herself in singles, earning the next ETSU point by downing Lazarevic, 6-3, 6-3, on court two. The win moves her 2012-13 record to 31-7 overall, 18-1 dual, and one victory shy of tying Sandie Knight for the most in a single season.

All-freshman Gerbasi then came back from her doubles defeat, earning a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-1, on court four over Cable. The freshman improves to 21-9 overall in singles and 11-4 on the dual season.

A long wait ensued for the final point. Kolovou, Dahbi and Andreazza were all within reach, but Kolovou finished off first two points ahead of Dahbi.
