ETSU women’s golf still battling at NCAA regionals
Friday, May 10, 2013
AUBURN, Ala. (May 10, 2013) – Senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) both carded team-best rounds of 3-over-par 75, but the ETSU women’s golf team lost ground in its hunt for a berth to the NCAA Championships during Friday’s second round play in the NCAA East Regional at the Auburn University Club.
While the Buccaneers were consistent and did not have a player post a score higher than a 76, the team still fell back from 11th to 14th place in the 24-team field. ETSU is still the only team outside of the nation’s Top 50 in the Top 15 on the leaderboard, but the Bucs are now 13 strokes back of eighth place, which is the goal in order to earn an NCAA Championship berth.
As ETSU battles to keep its 2012-13 season alive, No. 2-ranked Alabama is running away from the field for the regional title. The Crimson Tide currently stands at 22-under-par for the tournament and is 14 strokes better than second-place and No. 20-ranked Tulane.
Alabama is also dominating individually, with the top three spots on the leaderboard. Stephanie Meadow heads up that group of Tide players at 10-under-par 134 (68-66) for the tournament. Meadow entered the regional as the nation’s No. 1-ranked player.
For the Buccaneers, freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) still holds the top spot among ETSU players and is currently tied for 42nd. Meanwhile, juniors Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) are tied for 56th, followed by Garner and Wahl in a tie for 74th.
Third and final round play is set for Saturday. Fans can watch live scoring and get complete results by visiting Golfstat.com, while ETSUBucs.com will provide a complete wrap up of each day’s play.
