First signed recruit of the Ezell era at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 15, 2013) – First-year ETSU women’s basketball head coach Brittney Ezell announced Wednesday the signing of guard Jasmine Hotchkins (Phoenix, Ariz.) to a national letter of intent to join the Buccaneers women’s basketball program for the 2013-14 season.

Hotchkins, a 5-foot-4 point guard, averaged four points and 1.2 assists per game for the 2013 Arizona Division I state runner-up and 32-3 overall Pinnacle High School Pioneers in Phoenix, Ariz. Known as a facilitator on offense with the ability to create shots for herself and for her teammates, the guard’s determination also drew the attention of Ezell.

"We are thrilled to add Jasmine to the ETSU women's basketball program,” said Ezell. “Her selfless attitude, incredibly tireless work ethic and court savvy will make her a fan favorite immediately. I have a deep belief in Jasmine and in that she will make an immediate impact on the program and on the culture that we intend to create for Lady Bucs Basketball."

After transferring from Xavier College Prep to Pinnacle prior to her senior season, the native Arizonian’s development and progression was a welcome sight for Pinnacle head coach Troy Wiese who finally had a chance to coach the guard he had known for many years.

"I've known Jasmine for several years, since she was about nine years old, and I finally got the privilege of coaching her this year,” said Wiese. “She has always been a fierce competitor on the court, a floor general and a difference maker. She has been a hard worker from day one and that hard work got her to where she is as a player and person today."

Cal Swish AAU program head coach Russ Davis also noted on the type of player the Lady Bucs are welcoming.

"Jasmine will be a huge asset to ETSU,” said Davis. “They are getting a guard with a great work ethic, the ability to score and to make her teammates better. She is a very committed team player with a great attitude."

Hotchkins has also been coached under the tutelage of gold medal winner and Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Jennifer Gillom, who totaled six seasons as a player in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury and the Los Angeles Sparks before later serving as the head coach of the Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx. The current Connecticut Sun assistant coach sings similar praises about the guard’s game.

"Jasmine is a creative playmaker that knows how to score,” said Gillom. “She is a determined and passionate player that I truly enjoyed coaching."

As the first recruit in the Ezell era at ETSU, Hotchkins loves the direction of the program and is eager to get to work as part of the Lady Bucs basketball family.

"I am humbled and excited to be a part of the beginning of a new era in ETSU women's basketball,” said Hotchkins. “The ETSU Lady Bucs are not far removed from their three-year run as an NCAA tournament team, and though I do feel the bar is set high, with coach Ezell at the helm I feel it is achievable. In coach’s words, ‘it's better to under-promise and over-deliver.’ I have every intention to work relentlessly and tirelessly as a student-athlete to achieve the goals we set as a team and individually each and every year.”

Hotchkins joins shooting guard Shamauria “Jett” Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) as members of the signed 2013 Lady Bucs recruiting class. For more on ETSU women’s basketball throughout the offseason, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s hoops link.
