ETSU freshman is one of just eight players remaining in singles field

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 13, 2013) – ETSU’s David Biosca (Sant Fruitos De Bage, Spain) looked more like a seasoned veteran than a true freshman Sunday, rallying from one set down to pull off a thrilling three-set victory to earn a spot in the singles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regionals.

Biosca shook off a one-sided opening set loss to Memphis’ Johnny Grimal and played toe-to-toe with his opponent, a senior and former All-C-USA Singles First Team selection.

Knotted at 5-5 in the second set, Biosca held serve to take a 6-5 advantage before breaking Grimal’s serve to force a decisive third set.

With Biosca controlling the third set, 4-1, Grimal responded, reeling off wins in five of the next six games to reclaim the momentum. However, Biosca calmly put the clamps on Grimal’s run, breaking Grimal's serve to force a third-set tiebreaker.

As teammate Roger Ordeig (Gurb, Spain) cheered on, Biosca won the final two points of a thrilling, back-and-forth tiebreaker to put the finishing touches on a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 come-from-behind win.

“David [Biosca] proved, once again, to be a fresh and coldblooded freshman,” ETSU head coach Yaser Zaatini said. “He had so many chances to give up and refused to shut down. I am so proud of him.”

Having emerged from a field of more than 100 competitors, Biosca will take on Vanderbilt’s Rhys Johnson Sunday, Oct. 13 at 10:00 a.m. in one of four quarterfinal matches.

Live video and real-time scoring updates of the quarterfinal matches can be found online at the Tournament Headquarters.
