Third career Runner of the Week award for the sophomore; second this month
MACON, Ga. (Oct. 23, 2013) – Following a team-leading performance this past weekend at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., sophomore runner Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Runner of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
The accolade is the third of her career and the second of this month for the defending A-Sun Women’s Freshman Runner of the Year.
At the Open on Saturday, Oct. 18, Hirko notched a fourth-place overall finish, out of 216 competitors, with a time of 18:01.54. This standing paced the Buccaneers who as a team turned in fifth-place standing out of 27 teams at the meet. The performance was the best of the season for the Blue & Gold in a large and highly-competitive field.
The Pennsylvania native has now been the top finisher for ETSU in all four meets this season. In addition, she currently averages a top-10 overall finish through all four events, highlighted by taking first at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational with a time of 21:32.90 in a 6K on Friday, Sept. 20.
The Buccaneers will return to action in the Atlantic Sun Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Nashville, Tenn.
