Serena Clark tallies her seventh double-double of the season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2014) – Playing without three veteran players, the short-handed ETSU Buccaneers put forth a valiant effort Thursday evening but it was not enough in a 73-56 loss to the Jacksonville Dolphins inside Veterans Memorial Arena.

With the loss, ETSU drops to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in the Atlantic Sun, while Jacksonville improves to 9-10 on the season and 6-2 in league play.

Through the first six minutes of play, JU surged ahead to a nine-point lead, 13-4, but the Bucs answered to pull within six with 13:18 left in the first half. Over the next three minutes, ETSU continued to fight back and shortened its deficit to four, 17-13, with 10 minutes to go in the period. The Dolphins responded to increase their advantage to 10 at the 3:40 mark but the Bucs battled back over the duration of the period with a 10-5 streak to head into halftime trailing by only five points, 37-32.

The momentum established by the Blue and Gold at the end of the first half did not translate over to the second as ETSU really struggled to score. The Bucs scored five points in the first five minutes of the half and then started to experience problems with JU’s pressure defense. As the half wore on, ETSU’s lack of depth showed as it tried to get anything going on the offensive end. On the other hand, Jacksonville took advantage of the limited Bucs and began to increase its lead. In the end, the Blue and Gold could not find enough to supplement for its lack of key players as it fell, 73-56.

Jacksonville featured four players in double-figures, highlighted by 14 from Sherranda Reddick. ETSU had two-players with double-digit scoring performances, led by 12 points from Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.). Serena Clark (Stone Mountain, Ga.) notched her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds, while Maria Bond (Macon, Ga.) and Shamauria Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) were on the verge of double-figures with nine and eight points, respectively.

The Dolphins shot 44 percent from the field and 42 percent from behind the arc. JU also converted 16-of-23 (70 percent) free throws and held a 30-18 edge over ETSU in the paint. Jacksonville additionally forced the Bucs into 20 turnovers, resulting in 22 points off of these miscues. Complete with a full bench, the Dolphins got 26 points from its reserves and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points.

Short-handed ETSU struggled from the field at 32 percent and made only 4-of-15 from three-point range. The Bucs did battle on the boards with 38 total rebounds, featuring 16 offensive that translated into 18 points. The Blue and Gold also assisted on seven of its 16 made field goals and knocked-in 20 free throws.

The Bucs will continue league play in the River City when they take on the North Florida Ospreys on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4:30 p.m.
