Large-scale, regional competition features more than 4,000 student-athletes from 114 different schools in 58 scheduled events

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 27, 2014) – The ETSU track & field program will continue the newly-started outdoor season with a trip to the North Carolina State University campus to compete in the Raleigh Relays, Friday – Saturday, at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility.

Following a productive season-opening meet last week at the Charlotte 49er Classic - where the Bucs placed in the top-five in nearly 10 seeded events - ETSU heads to NC State with some momentum. After competing a reduced number of student-athletes at the Classic, the Blue & Gold will compete some new faces this weekend in a meet that ETSU will compete in for the second-straight season.

"We will compete some people for the first time this season," said ETSU Director of Track & Field George Watts, "and I look forward to seeing how they respond."

Last year, a number of strong performances were turned in by ETSU’s student-athletes in Raleigh, including Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) setting a new ETSU school record in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.64 and a fourth-place finish.

"We set two school records last week and I feel more will get broken as the season progresses," said Watts. "The kids have broken 16 school records since last year. That is very impressive."

Action at the Relays will kickoff on Friday morning with the 3000 meter steeplechase - with various sections of distance running events throughout the day - concluding with the 10,000 meter run around 10 p.m. In addition on Friday, field events will start with the men’s discus throw at 10 a.m. and will end with long jump events at 2:30 p.m.

Events will pick back up on Saturday, beginning first with distance and relay events like the 10,000 meter run and the 4x1500 meter relay in the late morning. Relay events will run until 4:45 p.m. with the 4x400 meter relay ending track events. Competition in the field will commence with the men’s hammer throw at 10 a.m. and action at the Relays will conclude with the women’s triple jump at 2 p.m.
