ETSU gunning for 23rd conference championship

BRASELTON, Ga. (April 19, 2014) – The ETSU men’s golf team begins its quest for an Atlantic Sun Championship Sunday morning as the Bucs begin play at The Legends Golf Club in Braselton, Ga.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS

The Bucs are coming off a sixth-place showing at the Mason Rudolph Championship, which was held two weeks ago at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Sophomore Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland), who registered his lowest collegiate score with a 5-under 66 in the final round, tied for ninth at 1-over 214, while junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) tied for 29th at 7-over 220.

Meronk’s third round score of 66 tied for the lowest score of the tournament as he moved from being tied for 32nd into placing in the top-10. Pugh also finished strong as he fired a 71 in the final round.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

The winner of this three-day conference championship receives the A-Sun’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional, which will be contested May 15-17.

ETSU is eyeing its third A-Sun Championship (23rd overall conference championship) as the Bucs brought home the title in 2007 and 2010. Both championships were won in the Peach State as the 2007 title was claimed at Sanctuary Cove in Waverly, Ga., while the 2010 championship was held at The Legends Golf Club.

Since joining the A-Sun, the Bucs have won the individual championship four times from 2007-10. Seamus Power, a two-time A-Sun champion, was the last individual to hoist the trophy back in 2010.

North Florida won the 2012 and 2013 championships, while UNF’s MJ Maguire captured the individual title a year ago.

The Bucs finished in second-place last year and were 14 shots back of the Ospreys. UNF won the title at 17-over 881. Pugh finished two strokes behind Maguire for second at 1-over-par 217.

THE FIELD

The 10 conference schools will be battling for the A-Sun crown this week in Georgia.

The Bucs are one of four A-Sun schools ranked in the top-60 of the Golfweek rankings. Mercer leads the four programs with a No. 33 ranking, while Kennesaw State (40), North Florida (53) and ETSU (58) round out the group.

Mercer has three golfers ranked in the top-100 of the Golfstat rankings for scoring average. Trey Rule is 50th (71.27), James Beale is tied for 64th (71.52) and Hans Reimers is 95th (71.82). UNF’s MJ Maguire is 90th (71.79).

ETSU LINEUP

ETSU will send out the same lineup the Blue and Gold have used all season. The squad consists of junior Rhys Pugh, sophomores Adrian Meronk, Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.), and Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland), and freshman Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Śląskie, Poland).

The Bucs are paired up with North Florida and Kennesaw State, and tee off Sunday morning at 9:45.
